Tax invoice

The GST document a registered supplier issues for a taxable supply. It carries specified particulars and is what lets the buyer claim input tax credit.

A tax invoice is not just a bill. It is the document the law recognises for a taxable supply, and your customer's input tax credit rests on it.

What it must carry

Your name, address and GSTIN; a serial number from a consecutive series; the date; the customer's name, address and GSTIN where registered; a description of the goods with HSN codes; quantity, unit and value; the taxable value and the rate and amount of each tax; the place of supply; and a signature or digital signature. Where e-invoicing applies, also the reference number and the signed QR code.

Tax invoice versus bill of supply

A registered dealer selling exempt goods, or a dealer under the composition scheme, issues a bill of supply instead — no tax is shown on it. Issuing the wrong document type is a common error when a business sells both taxable and exempt lines.

Numbering discipline

The series must be consecutive and unique for the financial year. Gaps, duplicates and hand-written overrides all become questions later. Let the system number the document.

How KillStock handles it

Invoices are raised against the customer and the item master, so GSTINs, HSN codes and tax rates come from records you set once. The printed document is GST-compliant, and every figure on it is the same figure your reports use.

A common mistake

Changing an issued invoice to fix an error. Once the document is out, correct it with a credit note or debit note so the trail stays intact.
